What Is Shea butter?
Shea butter is a fat pressed from the nuts of the African shea tree. It is soft at room temperature and melts on the skin.
What It Does in Skin and Hair Care
Shea butter is an emollient: it softens and smooths the skin and helps it hold on to moisture. It is a classic in lotions, soaps and baby care for dry, rough skin.
How to Use Products With It
- Use shea butter products after a bath, on slightly damp skin.
- In winter, use more on hands, elbows, knees and heels.
Tips and Cautions
- Shea comes from a nut. If you know you react to it, avoid it.
- Patch test first: put a little on the inside of your arm for a day or two before using it on your face or body.
- If your skin stays red, itchy or sore, stop using the product and see a doctor.
Questions

- Yes, shea butter is one of the classic softening ingredients for dry, rough skin.
- Is shea butter heavy on the face?
