What Is Ceramides?
Ceramides are fats (lipids) that are a natural part of the outer layer of the skin. Together with other lipids, they act like the mortar between bricks.
What It Does in Skin and Hair Care
In a moisturiser, ceramides support the skin barrier and help skin hold on to moisture, so it feels soft and comfortable instead of tight and rough.
They pair well with hyaluronic acid, which draws water in, and with shea butter, which softens.
How to Use Products With It
- Apply a ceramide lotion after bathing, while your skin is still slightly damp.
- Use twice a day in winter, and on elbows, knees and heels more often.
Tips and Cautions
- Patch test first: put a little on the inside of your arm for a day or two before using it on your face or body.
- If your skin stays red, itchy or sore, stop using the product and see a doctor.
