Looking After Dry Skin in Winter

Winter in Lahore and the north brings cold, dry air, and gas heaters dry indoor air even more. Skin can feel tight after a bath, look flaky on the shins and arms, and crack on the heels and hands.

Dry skin needs two things: a mild cleanser and moisture right after washing. Keep baths short and lukewarm, because hot water dries skin faster. Use a moisturising soap rather than a harsh one. Then, within a few minutes of drying off, while skin is still slightly damp, apply a lotion all over and a richer ointment on elbows, knees, hands and heels.

The Hydro Med range is made for this routine: a moisturising soap, a lotion with ceramides, hyaluronic acid and shea butter, and a rich ointment with petroleum jelly, beeswax and plant oils. Moisturise twice a day in the colder months. If dry skin is very itchy, cracked and sore, or does not improve, please see a dermatologist.

Questions

When is the right time to moisturise?

Right after washing, within a few minutes, while your skin is still slightly damp. That helps hold the water in.

Lotion or ointment: which one should I use?

A lotion is light and easy for the whole body. A rich ointment suits very dry areas such as heels, elbows and hands.

Should I stop using soap in winter?

No, but choose a mild, moisturising soap and keep baths short and lukewarm.

When should I see a doctor about dry skin?

If it is very itchy, cracked and painful, or does not get better with a steady routine.
