What Is Glycerin?
Glycerin, also spelled glycerine, is a clear, sweet, thick liquid made from plant oils. It is one of the most common ingredients in skincare, from face washes to soaps to creams.
What It Does in Skin and Hair Care
Glycerin is a humectant: it draws water into the skin and helps it stay there. In a cleanser it makes washing feel less drying. In a cream it helps skin feel soft and supple.
How to Use Products With It
- You do not need to do anything special: glycerin is already part of the product.
- In very dry weather, follow a glycerin cleanser with a moisturiser.
Tips and Cautions
- Pure glycerin from a pharmacy is very thick and sticky. Skincare products already contain it in a comfortable amount.
- Patch test first: put a little on the inside of your arm for a day or two before using it on your face or body.
Questions
- Is glycerin good for oily skin?
- Yes. Glycerin adds water, not oil, so it suits oily skin as well as dry skin.
- Why is glycerin in so many soaps?
- It helps make washing feel less drying, so skin feels softer after a bath.
