How to choose a face wash for oily skin

Acne Ease Facewash

Choose a face wash for oily skin by looking at three things: the texture (a gel or a light cream, not a heavy one), the ingredients on the label, and how your skin feels ten minutes after washing. Your face should feel clean and comfortable, not squeaky or tight. If it feels tight, the wash is too strong for you, or you are using it too often.

This guide helps you read a label, match a wash to your skin, and use it the right way in our heat.

First, know your skin

Oily skin looks shiny within a few hours of washing, mostly on the forehead, nose and chin. Pores can look bigger, and some people get breakouts. But oily skin is not always the same as acne-prone skin, and many people have a mix: oily in the middle of the face, normal or dry on the cheeks.

A quick check: wash your face, pat dry, and wait one hour without any product on it. If your whole face is shiny, your skin is oily. If only the nose and forehead are shiny, it is a combination type.

Heat and humidity make everyone feel oilier in summer. Your skin type has not changed, but your needs have. In winter, hard water and dry air can make the same face feel tight. A wash that suits you in July may feel too strong in January.

What to look for on the label

  • Texture. A gel or light cream lathers easily and rinses clean. Thick, heavy cleansers can leave a film on oily skin.
  • Ingredients you recognise. Read the box. The list is in the box in small print, so zoom in on a phone photo if you need to.
  • Directions that match your life. Morning and night use is normal for a daily face wash. Be careful with any wash that says to use it five times a day.
  • A warning section. Honest labels tell you to keep it out of the eyes and to stop if irritation happens.

Skip anything that promises overnight results. Face wash stays on your skin for seconds. It helps cleanse, and that is all it can do.

Gel or creamy?

A gel wash feels light and fresh. It suits hot weather and very oily skin.

Acne Ease Facewash is an oil control gel face wash for oily and acne-prone skin. The box lists tea tree oil first, along with aloe vera and D-panthenol. The directions say: wet your face, work it into a lather with water, massage gently for 10 to 20 seconds, rinse and pat dry. Use it twice a day. If your skin gets dry or starts to peel, use it once a day or every other day.

A creamy wash feels softer and more moisturising. It suits oily skin that also feels dull, or skin that gets dry in winter or in air-conditioning.

Giga White Creamy Facewash is a creamy face wash for all skin types. The box lists niacinamide, kojic acid, licorice extract, emblica extract and glycerin among its ingredients. You use it morning and evening on a slightly damp face, with small circles for 10 to 20 seconds, then rinse with warm water and dry gently. Read about niacinamide on its ingredient page if you want to know more.

Neither is better than the other in every case. Choose by how your skin feels, not by the label alone.

What about a soap bar?

Many families in Pakistan wash the face with whatever soap is in the bathroom. Bath soaps can be harsh on the face, and some leave it tight.

If you like a bar, pick one made for the face. Acne Ease Soap is an oil control bar made with tea tree oil, for oily and acne-prone skin. The box says it can be used on the face, and 2 to 3 times a day, with about 1 minute of gentle massage before rinsing. Keep the bar dry between uses so it lasts, and do not leave it sitting in a wet dish.

How to wash your face properly

  1. Wash your hands first. Dirty hands put dirt back on your face.
  2. Wet your face with lukewarm water.
  3. Use a small amount, about the size of a chickpea. More foam does not mean cleaner skin.
  4. Massage gently for 10 to 20 seconds. Move in small circles, away from the eyes.
  5. Rinse well. Check the hairline, jaw and sides of the nose.
  6. Pat dry. Do not rub. Use a towel that only you use.
  7. Moisturise within a few minutes, even if your skin is oily. A light lotion is enough.

Common mistakes

  • Washing too often. Twice a day is enough. After a sweaty day outside, one extra splash of plain water is fine.
  • Using very hot water. Warm is better.
  • Scrubbing hard. It does not clean deeper. It makes skin sore.
  • Changing wash every week. Give each one at least four weeks.
  • Layering many new products at once. Change one thing at a time.

When your skin tells you to stop

Some tightness or dryness can come from the weather alone. But stop using a face wash and let your skin rest if you see burning, strong redness, swelling or a rash. Rinse with plain water. If it does not settle in a day or two, ask a doctor.

See a doctor for breakouts that are painful, deep or do not settle, for skin that keeps flaring after you change products, or for anything that worries you. A face wash is a daily cleansing step. It is not a replacement for medical advice.

A simple starting plan

If you are unsure, start like this for four weeks:

  • Morning: face wash, light lotion.
  • Night: face wash, light lotion.
  • Nothing else new.

You can see the whole range on our face care page, and the acne-prone skin and daily cleansing pages group the products by need. For a full day plan, read our routine for oily and acne-prone skin.

In short

A good face wash for oily skin feels clean and comfortable, rinses off easily and is easy to use every day. Pick a gel for very oily days or a creamy wash if you want more softness, wash twice a day, and give it a month.

Questions

Should a face wash for oily skin feel squeaky?
No. Squeaky or tight skin after washing means the wash is too strong or used too often. Skin should feel clean and comfortable.
Gel or creamy face wash for oily skin?
A gel feels light and suits hot weather. A creamy wash feels softer and can suit oily skin that gets dry in winter. Choose by how your skin feels.
Can I use a soap bar on my face?
Only if it is made for the face. Many bath soaps are harsh on facial skin. Check the box directions first.
How long should I massage the face wash?
About 10 to 20 seconds, gently, then rinse well and pat dry.
