What Is Kojic acid?
Kojic acid comes from certain fungi used in food fermentation, such as the mould used to make rice wine in Japan. Kojic acid dipalmitate is an oil-friendly form of it that mixes well into creams and soaps.
Both appear on the ingredient lists of brightening products.
What It Does in Skin and Hair Care
Kojic acid is used in brightening care, for skin that looks more even and radiant. It is usually combined with other brightening ingredients, such as licorice extract or niacinamide, rather than used alone.
Brightening routines are slow and steady. Daily cleansing, moisturising and sun habits all matter as much as any one ingredient.
How to Use Products With It
- Use a brightening face wash or soap once or twice a day.
- Follow with a moisturiser.
- Protect your skin from the sun during the day: shade, a hat or dupatta, and a sunscreen.
- Use the routine for several weeks before judging the result.
Tips and Cautions
- Brightening products can feel stronger on sensitive skin. Start slowly.
- Patch test first: put a little on the inside of your arm for a day or two before using it on your face or body.
- If your skin stays red, itchy or sore, stop using the product and see a doctor.
