What Is Biotin?
Biotin is a B vitamin, sometimes called vitamin B7 or vitamin H. It is a common ingredient in shampoos and scalp products.
What It Does in Skin and Hair Care
In a shampoo or scalp spray, biotin is one of the ingredients of a hair-care routine for stronger-looking, fuller-looking hair.
A clean scalp and a routine you keep up every day matter most. Products are one part of it; sleep, food and stress play a part too.
How to Use Products With It
- Shampoo: massage into a wet scalp, leave for a minute or two, then rinse well.
- Scalp spray: spray onto a clean scalp, part by part, and massage in with your fingertips.
- Use the routine every day for a few months before judging.
Tips and Cautions
- Some hair fall every day is normal. Sudden, patchy or heavy hair loss needs a doctor, not a new shampoo.
- Keep scalp products away from the eyes.
- Patch test first: put a little on the inside of your arm for a day or two before using it on your face or body.
Questions
- Is biotin in a shampoo the same as a biotin supplement?
- No. A shampoo is a cosmetic for washing; supplements are a different thing and should be discussed with a doctor.
- How long should I use a hair-fall care routine?
- Give a daily routine a few months. If you notice sudden or patchy hair loss, see a doctor.
This page describes how biotin is used in cosmetics. It is not medical advice. For a skin or scalp problem that is painful, spreading or does not settle, please see a doctor.
